All libraries in the Old Colony Library Network (OCLN) are preparing for a major system upgrade that will significantly enhance library services for both patrons and staff. We are currently working to ensure a smooth transition, which will take place from Monday, April 27, through Thursday, April 30.

During this transition period, many of our usual services will be temporarily impacted. This initial message is intended to share what is happening and outline what you can expect in the coming weeks.

What “system” is being upgraded?

All the libraries in OCLN are upgrading their integrated library system. An Integrated Library System (ILS) is the software libraries use to manage books, accounts, and checkouts in one place. It connects staff systems with the public online catalog and online resources, making it easier to find materials and manage library services.

Why will services be impacted?

Each time you use your library card—whether to check out a physical book, borrow an e-book, log on to a public computer, or reserve a museum pass—the system verifies your card to confirm your account privileges.

During the migration, the system will not be able to verify these privileges, which will temporarily disrupt some library services.

What improvements can you expect to see?

Most system changes will be on the staff end, but there are some exciting things in store for patrons!

  • This includes a new robust search catalog that is ADA compliant, responsive, with a more intuitive user interface.
  • This catalog will allow you more opportunities to get to know your library, its collection, as well as programs and services it offers.
  • In the coming months after the upgrade there will even be a new network wide mobile App! This app will make it easier to place holds, look up materials, and more!

What can you do to prepare for the transition?

The best way to prepare for the migration is to make sure you have access to your library card. During the transition, you will be able to check out materials at the Circulation Desk (self-checkout will be unavailable), but staff will not be able to look up accounts by name, so having your card number readily available will be essential.

We recommend that you:

  • Locate your current library card
  • Request a replacement card, if yours is lost
  • Take a clear photo of your card and save it on your phone
  • Download a digital wallet app to store your card number*

*At this time, we are unsure whether patrons will be able to access their library card through the SPL app during the migration. We will share updates as soon as that information becomes available.

Questions? Just Ask.

We will continue to share updates as more information becomes available to ensure you feel prepared and well informed throughout the upgrade process. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any pressing migration questions at mskaar@sharon.ocln.org.
